Gospel Pictures
Gospel Pictures is a new section on my web site, www.thegospelinreallife.com, where I am creating pages that take a more detailed look at how Scripture fits together. The Old Testament is full of types and shadows that pointed ahead to Jesus’ substitutionary atonement on the cross and the subsequent formation of the church. These types and shadows picture the gospel in many different ways and in many different settings. Interpreting and understanding them correctly is essential to understanding how the Bible fits together and what God is doing in redemptive history. The Old Testament is dependent upon the New in gaining a clear understanding of what these types and shadows meant, and how to interpret them. Paul calls these gospel pictures of the Old Testament a “mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to the saints.” (Colossians 1:26). The writer of the book of Hebrews tells us that the Law of Moses was a mere shadow of things to come in Christ and that the sacrifices of the Law were simply an annual reminder of sin (Hebrews 10:1).
These discussions on Gospel Pictures are more technical in nature and that is why I have made them into pages on my blog instead of blog posts. But comments are open and welcome. I believe that in order to become grounded in the faith, it is necessary to move through the Bible systematically and intentionally. So here’s my plan with Gospel Pictures: we will move through each of the subjects below and see what we can extract from each that helps us to interpret Scripture by seeing the big picture and how the Bible fits together more clearly, and secondly, I hope we gain a deeper appreciation for what God is doing and has done in redemptive history in sending his Son to redeem helpless sinners. Here’s what we are going to spend our time on and these links will become active as I post each page:
- Getting the Big Picture: How Scripture Fits Together
- The Abrahamic Covenant
- The Old Covenant and the Law of Moses
- The Nature of the Ten Commandments
- Circumcision and Baptism
- The Sabbath
- The Nation of Israel
- The Davidic Covenant
